Preventative Health

At The Femina Women's Center, we believe in keeping women healthy. Regular preventive health screenings are important in achieving overall wellness. Problems can be discovered early or even avoided.  Preventive health care includes exams, screening tests and immunizations.  Certain signs and symptoms are age specific.

As part of routine screening or annual visits, you will be asked questions about your health.  A physical exam is performed. A pap test is recommended for women age 21 years or older.  For younger girls, a pap test should be performed 3 years after the first sexual experience.

Other tests to be performed are suggested for women in specific age groups i.e., screenings for sexually transmitted infections, colorectal cancer screenings, glucose testing, lipid profile assessment, thyroid hormone screening and bone density screening. Routine immunizations may be offered as well i.e., TDAP, hepatitis B, human papilloma virus (Gardasil®), meningococcal vaccine, herpes zoster and the flu vaccine.

Healthy lifestyle choices and habits are key to promoting good health.  A basic approach includes:
                                         •  A well balanced diet                                                       •  Avoid tobacco use
                                         •  Regular exercise                                                            •  Limit alcohol intake
                                         •  Avoid recreational drugs                                               •  Safety practices i.e, seat belt use
                                         •  Practices to avoid skin cancer                                     •  Regular eye exams
                                         •  Regular dental care                                                       •  Self-breast exams

Hysterectomy
At Femina Women’s Center we perform hysterectomies as well as alternative surgical /nonsurgical treatments. Hysterectomy is an operation to remove a woman's uterus. The uterus is the place where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant. Sometimes, the ovaries and fallopian tubes also are taken out. Hysterectomies are very common - one in three women in the United States has had one by age 60.

Reasons to have a hysterectomy include:

  • endometrial hyperplasia with atypia, an overgrowth of the uterine lining in which uterine cells contain precancerous changes
  • cancer of the uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes
  • genital prolapse, in which the ligaments that support pelvic structures like the uterus weaken and the organs drop
  • invasive cervical cancer
  • colon or bladder cancer that has spread to the uterus
  • uncontrollable bleeding after childbirth
  • Chronic pelvic pain; surgery can be a last resort
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis not cured by medicine or surgery

Asking the right questions of your doctor can help improve your care.
